What I Consider the Top Ten Greatest Quotes of all Time

No. 10

A wise person avoids it." -Albert Einstein

Why?

I believe that this quote belongs as #10 for a reason. We automatically assume that the only way to fix a problem is by facing our issues head on. Einstein contradicts this, and says that if we make a wise decision ahead of time, we are able to avoid the issue in the first place.

No. 9

"True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity,

before it is entitled to appellation." -George Washington

Why?

While some may dislike George Washington, I however find him not only a fascinating man, but also very wise. Washington understands that a good relationship between two people must undergo trials. After those trials, Washington believes that you are then entitled to call them "Friend."

No. 8

"The measure of a man is not how many servants he has

but how many men he serves." -Albert Einstein

Why?

This is incredibly sound advice coming from an incredibly bright person. Einstein's' quote comes from basic principles of the Bible.(Inferring the Golden Rule) In his quote, he recommends humbleness over pride, others before himself. That is why this quote got #8 on my list of Top Quotes.

No. 7

"Most bad government has grown out of

too much government." -Thomas Jefferson

Why?

Every time I read this quote I can't help but chuckle a little bit. It's not only ironic, but it has so much truth to it. Jefferson was the chief author of the Declaration of Independance, but also a Founding Father and 3rd president of the United States. It is so fitting why he would be talking about too much government, while he himself was the government. He was limiting his own power. He knew that with no government there would be lawlessness, but with too much government we would not be called a"Free Nation."

No. 6

"Our lives begin to end the day

we become silent about things that matter." -Martin Luther King JR.

Why?

I believe that it important to not lose sight of where we came from. Specifically as a nation, our freedoms which we fought long and hard for, will one day be stripped from us unless we defend them; and we cannot defend them if we are silent.

No. 5

"What is right is not always popular

And what is popular is not always right." -Albert Einstein

Why?

This is very true in our society. We are constanty encouraged by others to follow all that we are told, and never taught to think for ourselves. It is both an ignorant and dangerous way to live.

No. 4

"Nothing can stop the man with the

right mental attitude from achieving his goals." -Thomas Jefferson

Why?

I believe this is important as a nation because it promotes hard work and diligence to achieve a man's goals in life. {Note: I am not suggesting we will always get what we want, even if we work hard for it..}

No. 3

"The time is always right

to do what is right." -Martin Luther King JR.

Why?

This deserves to be in the top three because it speaks to everyone. MLK JR. does not make exuses for anyone, nor does he back down from his beliefs. He calls it what it is, and I personally appreciate it.

No. 2

"Nations do not die from invasion;

they die from internal rotteness." -Abraham Lincoln

Why?

This is true of every corrupt nation. Babylon did not fall because of it's physical weakness, but because of its internal weaknesses. I believe this should be a warning to us, and an ecouragement to us, that our internal strength comes from the Lord, not from man.

No. 1 Quote Of All Time-

"Do I not destroy my enemies

when I make them my friends." -Abraham Lincoln

Why?

Abraham Lincoln is many peoples favorite president, and rightfully so.(He is my favorite too) Most remember him as the guy who won the civil war, others remember he freed the slaves. I, however, remember him because of his nobilty. He was wise, honest, and above all else, a servant of the people. If all our presidents did the same, we would be a different nation for sure. This quote from Lincoln spoke personally to me and hopefully to you. If we did unto others as we would have them do unto us, and everyone lived by that rule, that is a world I would like to live in. That is The Top Ten Greatest Quotes of All Time.
